In many works, both in building and civil works, especially in rehabilitation projects as a result of extensions or changes of use, it is necessary to analyze the behavior of materials and structural types that have fallen into disuse, such as wood, factories, foundries, forgings ceramic, etc. Moreover, even for common materials, structural steel and reinforced concrete, the qualities used since the late nineteenth century to the first and early twentieth centuries for the second, they have nothing to do with the requirements of current regulations.
Technical studies and characterization of materials made by our department include, in general, the following work:
- Previous conditioning surveys of the buildings or structures to investigate.
- Characterization of structural geometry and / or verification of the information available for the project.
- Sampling campaign, testing on-site and laboratory to assess the strength properties of the materials used, and characterization according to the rules of the time, if necessary.
- Load testing, on site or in the laboratory to determine the residual bearing capacity of structural elements such as floors or beams.
- Performing complex patterns of structural analysis (ex. finite elements) to value the level of security and functionality of the affected structures.
- Technical Report summarizes the various tasks performed, including conclusions and recommendations for action, if necessary, to adapt the security, functionality and durability of construction to current regulations, the Technical Building Code, Earthquake Resistant Construction Standard, etc...
In cities and towns of Spain the buildings until 1880, whose current age is over 100 years, were almost without exception structure consisting of walls, facades factory, factory or timber framed within and party walls and floors joists slabs of wood, or in some cases masonry vaults especially in basements.
